Derrick Nathaniel Greenhill aka "LILROC" found his two passions early in his life. He started fighting fire at the age of 16 as a volunteer firefighter and made up his mind he wanted to be a "Que" not long after that. He was born into a military family and moved around the globe until his father retired and he completed high school in Nottoway, VA. Derrick then attended Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA where he was a Mass Communications/Journalism major with an emphasis in Public Relations. He entered Omega March 16th, in the glorious spring of 1996 thru Pi Gamma Chapter, where he was the ACE of "Longtime Comin". It was three months later that he started his professional fire service career in Norfolk Fire Department. He worked full time and attended NSU part-time but fully committed to Pi Gamma Chapter where he served in various capacities and was on the "PUB" crew of the chapter. Professionally Derrick became the youngest paid driver when he took a Tiller man position on Ladder 14 with only 6 months of service. He went on to become a HAZMAT Specialist and Tech Rescue Specialist move to Rescue Company 2 after three years of service. Derrick graduated in the spring of '99 from NSU and joined Gamma Xi chapter in Virginia Beach, VA. He was quickly promoting thru the fire service and went on to Rescue 1 where he spent most of his time as company officer. Derrick was then selected as one of the few to become a member of Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 2 of the FEMA Team of VB. He has been involved in many fire/EMS incidents locally along with national emergencies including 9/11. He joined Sigma Kappa Kappa chapter in Chesapeake, VA where he served as Vice-Basilus for two years. Derrick transferred to Newport News Fire Department Station #2 and also worked his way into the private sector of EMS. He worked as the Asst. Coordinator of Special Events with Network Medical and currently is the Director of Marketing for Northstar First Response, which is a private medical training center. He feels blessed to be able to do the job he loves and also utilize his degree in the same field. Derrick is very active in his community on the ground level. He now serves on Task Force 1 of Newport News Planning Commission, works on the city council campaign for Victor Albea in the South District, the Reclamation and Retention Chair for Kappa Iota Iota Chapter, newly elected President of the Ember Society, which is the Newport News Chapter of the International Association of Professional Black Firefighters, and also serves as the Co-Advisor since 2001 for Pi Gamma chapter at Norfolk State University.
